Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether brain responses within the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) are associated with clinical improvement following transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment in individuals with depression. Participants will be randomized to receive either active or sham intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) delivered to an individualized, fMRI-guided cortical target over a 6-week treatment course. The study will examine whether sgACC responses measured using interleaved TMS and functional magnetic resonance imaging (TMS/fMRI) before treatment predict antidepressant response and whether changes in sgACC responses throughout treatment are associated with changes in depressive symptoms. Study participation will include clinical interviews, questionnaires, MRI scans, interleaved TMS/fMRI sessions conducted before, during, and after treatment, and weekday TMS sessions for approximately 6 weeks.
