Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on brain circuits associated with fear and emotional processing in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Specifically, investigators aim to determine whether TMS can engage and modulate the amygdala, a brain region implicated in PTSD, and whether amygdala activity and fear-related physiological responses change following a 6-week course of active or sham TMS. Study participation will include completing questionnaires, clinical assessments, computerized cognitive tasks, fear-learning and fear-extinction procedures, receiving active or sham TMS every weekday for 6 weeks, and undergoing MRI scans both with and without concurrent TMS. Information obtained from these procedures will be used to evaluate amygdala engagement during TMS, changes in amygdala responsivity following treatment, changes in physiological responses to fear-related stimuli, and changes in PTSD symptoms over time.
