Expanded Access Three

In two patients with severe liver disease, we used a novel support system, extracorporeal liver cross-circulation (ELC), that temporarily connects the patients blood circulation to a donor liver outside the body. Both treatments lasted 1319 hours and were completed without serious complications. The procedures were stopped early due to clotting in a specific filter within the device, but this did not harm the patients or cause clots elsewhere. We improved blood thinner management in the second case, which helped the system run longer. Patients showed mild, temporary symptoms when the treatment started, but these resolved on their own. We also saw encouraging signs that liver function may have stabilized or improved. Based on these results, we plan to treat three additional patients, incorporating technical improvements to enhance safety and performance and to better define how to use this therapy.
