Brief description of study

This study will investigate the implications of loading on Achilles tendon health. To do this, we will evaluate Achilles tendon structure and function using ultrasound imaging, motion analysis, and wearable sensors.

Detailed description of study

This study will follow for 1 year after you have been prescribed a MAFO as treatment for Achilles tendon pain. This time includes 2 in lab assessments that will last approximately 1-hour, followed by a 1 month activity monitoring period each time. At 6 months and 1 year, we will follow up with surveys to track your outcomes. You will perform functional tasks such as walking. During this time, we will assess your movement with cameras and wearable sensors that measure your muscle activity, limb movement, and foot pressures. Functional tasks will be performed both with and without the MAFO. We will assess your Achilles tendon and calf muscle structure with ultrasound imaging. You will also complete several questionnaires. Activity monitoring sessions will follow each lab visit. You will record your activity for approximately 4 weeks using special wearable sensors attached to each of your legs.
