Building a Cross-cultural Semantic Framework for Odor Vocabularies
Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to investigate how people describe odor experiences using language. We are studying how different languages express olfactory (smell) experiences and whether there is a universal way that people organize their perception of odors. This is part of an international collaboration involving 30 laboratories in 26 countries.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how people describe odor experiences using language. We are studying how different languages express olfactory (smell) experiences and whether there is a universal way that people organize their perception of odors. This is part of an international collaboration involving 30 laboratories in 26 countries.
If you agree to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:
You will first complete a questionnaire about yourself and your sense of smell. Then you will smell a series of 60 odor pens and either describe the odors in your own words (Study 1) or rate how well certain words describe each odor (Study 2). You may participate in one or both parts of this study. approximately 1-2 hour per session. The maximum time for any single
session will not exceed 2 hours.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

Inclusion
- Healthy women and men
- 18-64 years old
Exclusion
- Non-native English speaker
- Poor sense of smell
- Poor sense of taste
