Brief description of study

This research study is evaluating a new imaging approach using F-18 flurpiridaz PET/CT to help locate abnormal parathyroid glands in people with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Patients with known or suspected abnormal parathyroid glands may be eligible to participate. The study will compare F-18 flurpiridaz PET/CT with the imaging tests currently used as part of standard clinical care to determine how well each method identifies abnormal parathyroid glands.

Detailed description of study

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which one or more of the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone. In many patients, this is caused by an enlarged or overactive parathyroid gland called a parathyroid adenoma.

This research study is evaluating a type of PET/CT scan using an imaging agent called F-18 flurpiridaz to see how well it can identify abnormal parathyroid glands. We will compare the results of the F-18 flurpiridaz PET/CT scan with sestamibi SPECT/CT, an imaging test that is commonly used to locate abnormal parathyroid glands.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Medical Research
  • Age: 18 years - 99 years
  • Gender: All

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older.
  • Have been diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism based on blood tests showing high calcium or abnormal parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.
  • Have had a sestamibi SPECT/CT scan within the past 6 months, or are scheduled to have one before the study PET/CT scan.
  • Are planning to have parathyroid surgery within 6 months after the study PET/CT scan.

You may not be eligible if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of the PET/CT scan.
  • Are unable to safely complete the imaging scan. For example, this may include severe claustrophobia, difficulty remaining still during the scan, or another condition that could interfere with the imaging procedure.

The study team will review your medical history and other eligibility requirements to determine whether this study is appropriate for you.
