Brief description of study

The objectives of this proposal are to: 1) describe the incidence of depression and trajectory of depressive symptoms; 2) identify potential determinants of depression; and 3) characterize the consequences of depression in a large, international cohort of patients with PC and in subgroups of this population during early and late follow-up. Our primary aim is to measure the incidence of depression in patients with new PC or requiring treatment with ADT. Our secondary aim is to characterize the relationship between ADT use and the risk of incident depression. Our tertiary aims are to a) evaluate the relationship between modifiable characteristics (alcohol use, smoking, physical activity, weight, waist circumference, handgrip strength, gait speed, capacity to perform activities of daily living) and the risk of new depression; b) to describe the relationship between social determinants of health (race; education; employment; disability; partnership status) and the risk of new depression; and c) to evaluate the relationship between depression and the outcomes of death or unplanned hospitalization overall and stratified by important characteristics (race; education; employment; PC risk).

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Medical Research
  • Age: 45 years - 99 years
  • Gender: Male

Inclusion Criteria:
Patients with PC are eligible for this study if:

  1. They have been diagnosed with PC by a physician within the past 12 months or
  2. Have initiated ADT within the past 6 months or
  3. Have a plan to start ADT within the next month.

Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Are unwilling to provide consent, or
  2. Patients under 45 years are not eligible for recruitment.
  3. Prostate cancer was found incidentally following cystectomy for bladder cancer
