Cannabis and the aging brain: a pilot study investigating mechanisms of cognitive decline in adults with cannabis use disorder.
Brief description of study
The purpose of this research is to study how regular cannabis use may affect brain function and cognition in individuals with cannabis use disorder.
The study will use two types of imaging to structurally and functionally analyze the brain. We will use MRI scans to study the brain. MRI scans use large magnets to create a magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the brain. We will test brain functions at rest and while performing a memory task. You will be asked to complete 2 MRI scans.
Detailed description of study
If you agree to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:
A consent/screening visit that consists of a medical history with a clinician, urine drug screen, and questionnaires to determine if this study is a good fit for you.
Two study visits where you will undergo 2x MRI scans.
At one of the visits (either the screening visit or MRI visit) you will undergo neurocognitive testing on a computer interface
You will be asked to come to the Center approximately 3 times over a period of approximately 1 month depending on scheduling restrictions.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Cannabis,Healthy
-
Age: 18 years - 60 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion criteria regular cannabis users
- 18-60 years of age
- Willing to provide signed, informed consent and commit to completing the study procedures
- Report regular use of cannabis
Inclusion criteria for health control group
- 18-60 years of age
- Willing to provide signed, informed consent and commit to completing the study procedures
Exclusion
- HIV infection confirmed by an on-site rapid HIV test at screening. HIV affects neurocognitive function, even in otherwise asymptomatic individuals, which can confound the results of MRI testing.
- Positive urine pregnancy test at the screening or study visit. Women who are breast feeding will not be eligible for this study
- Weight is >350 lb.
- Self-reported claustrophobia, which in the opinion of an investigator would interfere with acquisition of MRI.
- Contraindications to MRI (e.g., metal in the body that cannot be removed and is not MRI compatible). An MRI screening form will be completed during screening to identify contraindications.
- Inability to tolerate imaging procedures as determined by an investigator or treating physician.
