Brief description of study

This study looks at the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP1-RA) medications such as Zepbound, Wegovy, etc. on muscle health in adults with obesity. This will be evaluated using an MRI scan before starting a GLP-1 RA  and after losing 10% of body weight on the GLP-1 RA.

Detailed description of study

This study will last 9 months, or after participants lose 10% of their recorded baseline body weight, whichever occurs first. The study involves two MRI study visits: one before participants start their GLP-1 RA medication and one after they lose 10% body weight. Some participants may also be asked to come in for a midpoint scan when they lose 5% of their bodyweight, which means they will have three study visits total. Participants will be compensated for each completed MRI scan visit. Please note that this study does not provide any medication. We are recruiting participants who have already received a prescription for a GLP1-RA from their doctor and have the medication, but have not started it yet.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, PCOS
  • Age: 20 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion

  • Have been prescribed a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication such as Wegovy, Zepbound, etc for the first time, and have not started the medication yet

Exclusion

  • Prior exposure to a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication such as Wegovy, Zepbound, etc
  • Contraindications to MRI including but not limited to
    • claustrophobia or inability to lie in MRI machine for up to 70 minutes
    • metal implants
  • Type 1 Diabetes
