Brief description of study

Monell Chemical Senses Center is seeking individuals who are A) experiencing taste loss or taste dysfunction, OR B) healthy adults. Eligible candidates may be invited to a research study involving tasting solutions and providing responses. You will be asked to attend 1 session lasting 15-60 minutes. A $10 – 30 gift card will be provided. 

Detailed description of study

 

This research study is being conducted to investigate the range of taste functions and dysfunctions across various adult populations. You are invited to this study because you: 

  • have or are experiencing a change or loss in your sense of taste (Group A)
  • OR
  • are a healthy adult (Group B)

If you agree to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:  

  • Fill out a questionnaire asking about your health-related information
  • Perform a series of taste tests

The results of the study are intended to:

  • 1) increase our understanding of taste function/dysfunction in various adult populations and
  • 2) help develop a taste test kit to screen taste dysfunction.

The study will be performed at Monell Chemical Senses Center, 3500 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Taste Dysfunction, Healthy
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion (Group A)

  • Experiencing taste-related symptoms, including but not limited to:
    • Complete loss of taste
    • Reduced taste sensitivity
    • Distorted or altered taste
    • Phantom taste without stimulus

Exclusion (Group A): N/A

Inclusion (Group B)

  • Above 18 years old
  • Healthy

Exclusion (Group B)

  • Any of the following

    • Smoking

    • Taking prescription pain medication

    • A history of taste, smell, or other oral disorders

    • A history of middle ear surgery

    • Current oral lesions, canker sores, or piercings

    • Current pregnancy

    • Diabetic or taking insulin
