Brief description of study
The objective of this study is to obtain neural recordings to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying food-cue processing in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS). By exploring these mechanisms, we aim to enhance our understanding of how DBS influences weight changes in PD patients. We hypothesize that specific frequency bands of LFP activity will show significant modulation in response to food cues compared to neutral stimuli5. Furthermore, we predict that these LFP markers will correlate with changes in food-related motivation and reward processing, potentially explaining why some PD patients experience weight gain after DBS6. The primary objective of this study is to identify LFP markers associated with food-cue reactivity in the STN of PD patients. This will involve analyzing LFP recordings during exposure to food-related stimuli to determine specific electrophysiological signatures that correlate with food-cue processing. Additionally, we aim to explore how these neural markers correlate with clinical outcomes, such as weight changes and improvements in motor symptoms, following DBS. We will also investigate whether specific DBS parameters or electrode locations influence the observed LFP patterns and their association with food-cue processing.

Inclusion Criteria
Adult patients implanted with sensing-enabled DBS for Parkinson’s disease.
Patients able to read and understand English and to follow simple instructions
Patients willing to sign the informed consent form and participate in the study
Exclusion Criteria:
Patients unable to understand or cooperate with study procedures
Patients unwilling to sign the informed consent for and participate in the study
Patient with dementia
Patients who are pregnant because they are not DBS candidates
