The University of Pennsylvania is conducting a 6-week research study to learn about your experience using online grocery stores and online restaurant ordering applications. 

Detailed description of study

The University of Pennsylvania is conducting a 6-week research study (The Click & Pick Study) to learn about your experience using online grocery stores and online restaurant ordering applications. In total, you will be able to earn up to $367 for your participation. If you are eligible and agree to join, we will ask you to complete the following research procedures: 

 

  1. Surveys: You will complete two surveys — one at the start of the study and one at the end. You will be paid $10 for the first survey and $15 for the second.   

  2. Interviews about your eating habits. We will ask you to do two, 30-minute interviews with a trained member of our research team who will ask you in-depth questions about your eating habits. You will be paid $10 for each of the first two interviews, and $15 for each of the second two interviews for a total of $50.  

  3. Weekly online grocery and lunch shopping: For 6 weeks, you will buy groceries and lunch once per week from our online grocery store, “Lola’s” and our online restaurant “Grab Grub”.  

    1. Each Sunday morning, we will text you a link to the online ordering platforms. Grocery orders will be due by Monday at 11:00 AM and will be delivered the next day (Tuesday).  

    2. Lunch orders will be due by Tuesday at 11:00 AM and delivered Wednesday afternoon. 

    3. Any money you don’t spend (up to $30/week for groceries and up to $12/week for lunch) will be added to a study debit card at the end of 6 weeks. 

  4. Weekly food-related receipts collection: Send in pictures of receipts for all food or beverage purchases from grocery shopping trips, restaurant meals, vending machines, etc., outside of the study. You will be compensated $5 at the end of each week for the first 4 weeks; this payment will increase to $10 at the end of each week during Weeks 5 and 6.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: No listed requirements
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

To be eligible, you must:  

  • Be 18 years of age or older 

  • Read and speak English or Spanish 

  • Live in the areas of Philadelphia, San Antonio, or Houston and plan to be there for the next 6 weeks 

  • Have a household size of 6 or fewer people 

  • Not be currently eligible for or participating in SNAP or another government program that automatically qualifies you for SNAP 

  • Be low- or middle-income 

  • Have regular internet access 

  • Do most of the grocery shopping for the household 

  • Have a smartphone that can take and send pictures 

  • Eat at McDonald's (or a similar fast-food restaurant) at least once per month 

  • Have a safe address that can receive Walmart+ and Grub Hub deliveries 

Exclusion 

  • Does not meet all of the inclusion criteria
