UPCC 40312 HUP-CHOP Neurosurgery Tumor Tissue Bank Collaborative

PURPOSE We would like to accrue patients consecutively over a several year period in order to collect tissue from many histopathologic subsets of nervous system tumors. Primary brain tumors occur nationally at a rate of approximately 17,000 new cases annually and within this group there are numerous subtypes. At the University of Pennsylvania Health System, fewer than 100 cases of primary and recurrent residual glial tumors are managed clinically within a one-year period. In order to evaluate genomic and proteomic data from potentially small numbers of primary tumors, particularly those of lower histologic grade, we would anticipate an open-ended accrual period. Metastatic brain tumors occur more frequently and will be included in our analysis. One aim of this work is to identify molecular genetic events unique to each subset of primary nervous system tumors. Features that may contribute to brain metastasis will also be identified within the population of metastatic tumors. The molecular and genetic changes in nervous system tumors will be evaluated in order to identify alterations that are associated with varying stages of nervous system malignancies. The study team will seek to identify correlations between these changes and histopathologic features identified as part of standard pathological diagnostic procedures.
