Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to investigate if using e-cigarettes (ECIGS) and oral nicotine pouches (ONPS) help smokers to transition away from combustible cigarette smoking and reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals.

Detailed description of study

This research study is being conducted to examine the effects of e-cigarette (ECIG) and oral nicotine pouch (ONP) use on the ability to switch from combustible cigarettes. Study participants will be randomly assigned to and provided with either an e-cigarette and pods or oral nicotine pouches (at no cost) and be instructed to use them across 6 weeks. The entire study consists of 9 in-person sessions at our Center over the course of 7 weeks (about 1 visit/week) plus 1 follow-up visit 6-months after switching to ECIGS or ONPS.

The first 3 visits will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete, and the remaining sessions will take about 15-30 minutes.

Participants will be asked to:

Provide breath samples.
Provide urine samples.
Meet with a quit-smoking counselor to create a plan for switching to ECIGS or ONPS.
Complete computer tasks and questionnaires about smoking behavior and other smoking-related topics.
Use the ECIG or ONP in our Center’s well-ventilated smoking room.
Collect and return all used cigarette filters and pods or pouches in date-stamped baggies provided by the Center.
