Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether smokers who have been unable to quit with traditional approaches can switch to e-cigarettes and if flavor affects the ability to switch.

Detailed description of study

This research study is being conducted to examine whether e-cigarette flavors affect the ability to switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes. During the study, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three flavors: menthol, tobacco, or fruit e-cigarettes. Participants will be provided with the e-cigarette and pods of their assigned flavor (at no cost) and be instructed to use them across 6 weeks. The entire study consists of 9 in-person sessions at our Center over the course of 7 weeks (about 1 visit/week) plus 1 follow-up visit 6-months after switching to e-cigarettes.

The first 3 visits will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete, and the remaining sessions will take about 15-30 minutes.

Participants will be asked to:

  • Provide breath samples.
  • Provide urine samples.
  • Meet with a quit-smoking counselor to create a plan for switching to e-cigarettes.
  • Complete computer tasks and questionnaires about smoking behavior and other smoking-related topics.
  • Use the e-cigarette in our Center’s well-ventilated smoking room.
  • Collect and return all used cigarette filters and pods in date-stamped baggies provided by the Center.
