The role of flavor in the substitutability of e-cigarettes for combustible cigarettes among persistent smokers.
Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether smokers who have been unable to quit with traditional approaches can switch to e-cigarettes and if flavor affects the ability to switch.
Detailed description of study
This research study is being conducted to examine whether e-cigarette flavors affect the ability to switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes. During the study, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three flavors: menthol, tobacco, or fruit e-cigarettes. Participants will be provided with the e-cigarette and pods of their assigned flavor (at no cost) and be instructed to use them across 6 weeks. The entire study consists of 9 in-person sessions at our Center over the course of 7 weeks (about 1 visit/week) plus 1 follow-up visit 6-months after switching to e-cigarettes.
The first 3 visits will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete, and the remaining sessions will take about 15-30 minutes.
Participants will be asked to:
- Provide breath samples.
- Provide urine samples.
- Meet with a quit-smoking counselor to create a plan for switching to e-cigarettes.
- Complete computer tasks and questionnaires about smoking behavior and other smoking-related topics.
- Use the e-cigarette in our Center’s well-ventilated smoking room.
- Collect and return all used cigarette filters and pods in date-stamped baggies provided by the Center.
