Brief description of study
This study looks at how people learn to do things with robots. We want to see if it’s easier to learn when you work with someone else or when you do it by yourself. We are also interested in how different people with different physical and thinking abilities learn these skills, and how working together with a partner can make a difference.
Detailed description of study
For this study, participants will be asked to visit the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Medicine Rittenhouse, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 1800 Lombard Street, 1st Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19146.
Participants will be asked to complete the following:
*Upper limb training with a rehabilitation robot
*Retention assessment of motor learning
*Clinical assessments of cognitive and motor function
*Robot-based assessments of cognitive and motor function
*Surveys
The study is composed of 3 parts. You may be asked to participate in one, two or all of the parts on separate days.
Part 1 includes a clinical and robot based assessment of your motor and cognitive function by a member of the research team
Part 2 includes robot based motor learning and training using our Haptic Theradrive robot. When you do this there may be another patient operating the other robot. As you complete this task you may experience forces that assist or resist your movement
Part 3 includes a retention assessment of the robot based motor training.
Each session will last approximately 1/2 hour to 3 hours each.
You will be compensated $35/session. In addition, you may be compensated for transportation costs up to $5 if necessary.
*Participants may be videotaped or photographed in any one of the sessions for purposes of documenting our process.
