Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate if closing off the left atrial appendage (LAA) of your heart (a small-sack like structure that is part of the upper chamber of the heart) during scheduled heart surgery with a surgical device known as the AtriClip, reduces the risk of a future stroke.

Detailed description of study

If you participate in this cardiac device study, you will be randomized (like the flip of a coin) during your surgery to either having your left atrial appendage closed off with a surgical device, or not having any additional procedure besides your scheduled regular cardiac surgery. You will have periodic surveys to fill out over a 5-year time period.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Cardiac surgery
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 99 Years
  • Gender: All

Upcoming need for cardiac surgery; no known atrial fibrillation; adult
