Brief description of study

The research study is being conducted to determine the effectiveness of using hyperpolarized xenon-129 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosing and predicting treatment outcomes for patients who received endobronchial valve (EBV) therapy to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a disease of the lungs caused most often by smoking. Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR), is an FDA-approved treatment for select patients with severe COPD. 

Detailed description of study

Participants will be asked to complete the following research procedures: 
 • Quality of Life Pulmonary Questionnaires: 
          o St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire 
          o Modified Medical Research Council Questionnaire 
          o COPD Assessment Test (CAT) 
• Pulmonary function test (if not completed with your physician prior to attending the study) 
• Practice for the breathing procedure being performed during the study 
• MRI scanning using the inhaled MRI contrast agent Hyperpolarized Xenon-129 (HP 129Xe)

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD
  • Age: 18 Years
  • Gender: All

Patients with COPD and severe emphysema who are undergoing evaluation for lung volume reduction surgery or endobronchial valve placement,

-OR-

Healthy volunteers aged 40 years and older are also eligible for this study.
