Brief description of study
In this study, we aim to explore how robots can help us understand and support daily activities and cognitive-motor skills in people living and aging with HIV. Daily tasks, known as Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), often require good executive functioning and coordination. Unfortunately, there aren't many effective ways to measure challenges in performing these tasks. HIV can cause difficulties in these areas due to accelerated aging and HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders. Our goal is to develop better tools to identify and address these challenges, improving the quality of life for people living with HIV.
We plan to use advanced technology to enhance the health and well-being of people living with HIV, especially as they age and manage other disabilities. We've created a set of innovative robot-based activities that can accurately measure both large and small movements in the upper body, as well as cognitive skills related to planning and decision-making. Our goal is to see how these measurements can help predict and improve the ability to perform daily tasks for older adults, both with and without HIV. We also want to understand how HIV affects the management of tasks that require both physical and mental effort.
Detailed description of study
Study activities will take place at Rehabilitation Robotics Lab located inside Penn Medicine Rittenhouse at 1800 Lombard Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146. Transportation to the lab will be provided.
We are looking for two groups of participants:
1) People living without HIV and without brain impairments who are 50 years old and above.
2) Participants who are living with HIV who are 50 years old and above, and who are currently on anti-retroviral treatment.
If you are deemed eligible after a pre-screening phone call, the onsite study activities will take four hours with rest times built in. Activities include cognitive and motor clinical assessments and the use of a robot to complete several recall tasks.
Participants will be compensated $50 at the end of the session.
