Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of liver transplant when the donor is placed on a normothermic perfusion machine prior to donation of the liver. The perfusion machine restores oxygenated blood flow to organs in the abdomen such as the liver. The use of the machine may improve the quality of the organs to be transplanted. It also allows the ability to assess organ function before transplantation potentially leading to superior outcomes compared to current DCD results. This type of perfusion machine is currently used in patients whose lungs can not provide enough oxygen to the body.
Target population are cardiac death donors and their prospective liver transplant recipients. Procedures include placing the deceased donor on the ECMO device prior to donation of the liver, a post reperfusion liver biopsy and data collection.
This trial is open to only those patients listed for a liver transplant and have agreed to receive a liver from a donor who has experienced cardiac death.
