Treatment In Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm: Surgery versus Surveillance

Brief description of study

This study aims to compare the outcomes of patients undergoing early surgical intervention for ascending aortic aneurysms to those undergoing aneurysm surveillance.

Patients with aneurysm diameters between 5.0 and 5.4 cm will be randomized to receive either medical therapy or elective surgery and will be followed annually for 5 years. The second arm of this study will establish a history registry of patients with aneurysms greater than 5.5 cm who refuse surgery or are not surgical candidates. Subjects will be screened via clinic appointments with investigators within the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery. Based on medical history and surgeon recommendations, eligible patients will then be contacted either in-person during clinic or over the phone to discuss participation interest.

This trial will include patients diagnosed with an asymptomatic ascending aortic aneurysm between 5.0 and 5.4 cm in maximal diameter.
